The "big boy" bed

Our sweet, rambunctious, active, busy, active son is growing out of his crib! He's nearly as long as the crib now that he sleeps with a pillow and he tosses and turns constantly (to the point the mattress- a very pricey mattress at that- is now sunk down in the middle. We aren't ready to trust his busy body to stay in a big boy bed but we're very tempted to order this:
It fits a twin bed. It's a touch spendy ($139.) but it could solve our problem as far as Declan needing to move up in bed size. Hmm. What to do, what to do? I don't even know what age we'll feel comfortable trusting him with free reign of his room but not anytime soon. Blogland, what do you think?

Well Erik saw this tent and said he wanted to sleep in it with his new baby. Ha!

I wouldn't buy that unless desperate. Declan may surprise you. Erik has been in a big bed since about 18 months and rarely gets out.

We need to switch Lainey over (18 months) soon too -- don't want to buy an extra crib.

Anyway, I bet it will go better than you think. Good to know that a tent is available though if Lainey gets out of bed every 30 seconds!

With how smart he is...I'm surprised he hasn't figured out zippers or how to undo the tent over his crib.

I think it's great!! Look Declan!! You get to sleep in a tent!! You are. So cool! My friend's 2 year old nephew just fell out of his big boy twin bed and cracked his head open. Needed a trip to the ER and many stitches. So yes,I think the bed tent is a great idea!

Hmmm, do you have lots of stuff in his room? G-man has been in a big boy bed since I had Colbie- and not because we put him there. He crawled out of his crib the day I went to the hospital and conveniently our neighbors were tossing out their toddler bed the day we got back home- and the rest is history. He actually liked it more than he was enjoying his crib at that time and didn't fuss one bit. As far as trusting him in his room...we don't really have anything in there except some stuffed animals- but we find that at least with him, he stays in his toddler bed and goes to sleep without much of a fight usually. He may sleep right away, or may wait 30-60 minutes but since the outlets are covered (with special plugs and not the pull out ones), we don't really have anything to worry about. He has never messed with the cord to the monitor either. The only thing we haven't let him have access to is the cool mist humidifier.

As far as Declans possible new bed. Looks like any little boys dream! It would be great for the imagination and maybe that is what we will do when we get G a larger bed.

Oh, and G is super duper busy and never stops moving either, but for whatever reason, if he does get back up after we tuck him in, he always crawls back into bed to sleep. Maybe its because we also have a pricey crib mattress (that fits in the toddler bed) and it is much more comfortable than carpet! ;)

Hmmm.... good question! I think whatever works best for you is what works. For us, I'm going to transition Holly after the first of the year. She's been ready for a while but Santa is bringing the toddler bedding so I've been waiting. Hannah is getting bedding too but I'm waiting to upgrade her to big girl! I agree with "Simply Complex" about what do you have in his room? I have to put window locks (we are a 2 story) and may upgrade the power cord and outlet covers. But, other than that (and the humidifier), there are only books, stuffed animals and their clothes to get into.... but I'm sure if you make it fun, like a tent, then he'd be happy. Good luck!!

I was worried about putting Colin in the toddler bed (his crib converts to a toddler daybed with just a smaller opening in the middle of the front of the bed) and leaving the crib behind. I was worried he wouldnt stay IN bed willingly and worried because he rolled all over the crib when he slept. He'd wake up at the total opposite end from where I layed him down the night before. But amazingly when he got in the toddler bed he stayed in the same position all night long. I don't know how he knew he couldn't roll all over anymore, but he did. He hardly moves all night long and he does really good going to bed and staying there. You might be surprised at how well Declan does with a twin or a toddler bed.

I've been having all the same thoughts. The tent is a great idea!! You'll have to let us know what you decide on and how it works :).

We sucked it up and went to the toddler bed. It is a learning process. Do what you feel comfortable with. My thoughts, he will learn to get out of that long before you are ready for him to so might as well go for the toddler bed.

The tent is super cute, but I'm wondering the same thing...how long it'll work because lots of those have zippers on the inside, too (we have travel tent-beds that zip up like that and their zipper handles (??) are doubles.

I'm always in awe of people with kids that have tons of stuff in their rooms. Ava destroys everything or topples over furniture (including kid's sized chairs, which she then uses to climb/hang on/etc) and so had very little in her room. Ethan has some stuff in his room but generally I'd not trust him with open closets, etc. They're both getting durable toy chests for Christmas, so we'll see how long they last. my advice? If you're worried about stuff, clear out his room. If you're needing containment or safety at night (we were worried about this because our kids' rooms are on second floor, so when they were pretty little in beds, we didn't want them falling down the stairs at night), get a wifi camera and gate the door or turn the lock around so that he CAN be shut in when needed for safety, or for showers.

we moved our son (2 months younger than yours) into a toddler bed at 18 months and it's been great. He doesn't have toys in his room so he isn't tempted to get up and if he does, we start taking stuffed animals away (a favorite of his). So unless he needs something, he doesn't get up :)
