We survived our first night!

So it's 6am and, if you know me, it's obvious that I'm a mommy b/c I never ever get up this early. Truth be told- I haven't slept yet. Declan has been eating almost 2 oz every 2-3 hours and then we can get him to sleep for a couple hours but I'm just not used to baby sounds so I just constantly checked on him to make sure he was okay. He has tons of gas (they warned us) so that makes for a pretty uncomfortable dude at times. The birthparents told us he slept only in the carseat or with them so, though we tried the crib, he ended up next to us in the living room all night in his carseat. I would say we are pretty overwhelmed with parenthood. but also soooo ridiculously blessed.

p.s....the dog children are overly interested in Declan. It's a bit annoying actually. One of us has to hold off two 60 lb dogs while the other feeds. Otherwise Decs will get licked and sniffed like crazy. I hope this is a stage that passes. For these first few days they'll have a lot of "kennel time" and the guilt has already set in but hopefully they get used to his presence and back off. Anywho...

He is addorable!!! I know of several babies that will only sleep in their seats. I think its because of the closeness of their surroundings in it.

As for the dogs, I suggest that one at a time for a few minutes let Declan sit in his seat on the floor and let the dogs sniff him. When they start to lick tell them no and pull away. After a few days they will be used to him being around and most likely become protective. It may also help if you hold him and let them sniff while you pet them so they know you can love them both at the same time.
Congrats again!

I agree with Brandih2007 comment about the dogs, also, everything that he wears/soils/spits up on...after you change him, let the dogs smell it! They will get used to him very quickly. That's what we did with our dogs and they were "dis-interested" within a week!
Good luck!

My dogs were the same, and they got used to it. Now they just sniff the babies and go back to their business - except when we put them on the floor, but we gate them off.

For the gas, it might be the formula... Mine were very gassy until we switched. Gentle Ease made a huge difference (and you can get the generic at Target to save money). Or you can try mylicon drops or gripe water, some people swear by it (didn't really work for mine!).

Good luck... he's adorable!

I'm glad you all made it through the first night. You are both doing an incredible job. The carseat is definitely a good idea, especially if Declan has reflux. Thanks for sharing another beautiful picture of your baby boy. :)

I know nothing about babies, so I'm not going to attempt to act like I do, but I'm loving reading every update and hearing how things are going :) And I do know that you are both are already amazing parents!

I agree with Natalie.... I cried so many nights thinking I was an inadequate mother, but soon enough you know his personality, wants, and be sleeping through the night! Well, maybe like, 6 hours, but that'll be heaven!! I hope you can find something that works with the gas!! Can't wait to see him today!!! Yippee!!!
